Learning at Iowa is campus-wide framework to promote effective learning for all students, using evidence-based strategies from cognitive science.

Learning in university courses is demanding, and most students report not having been taught how to study or learn effectively before arriving on campus. The Learning at Iowa team partnered with academic departments and administrative units across campus to address this challenge, developing practical and easy-to-implement resources tailored to students, instructors, and staff.

The Learning at Iowa framework was developed with support from the P3 UI Strategic Initiatives fund as part of the University's commitment to "Foster high-quality teaching and dynamic educational experiences that empower all students to achieve their aspirations" (Goal: Excellence in Teaching and Learning, Strategic Plan, 2022-2027).

The Three Ms

Launched in 2021, Learning at Iowa introduces students to the Three Ms for Effective Learning—Mindset, Metacognition, and Memory. Research shows that these three concepts help students learn content and skills that will endure far beyond their college years.

Leadership Team

The Learning at Iowa leadership team included representatives from the Office of Student Learning (formerly "Academic Support & Retention") and the Center for Teaching, as well as graduate students from psychology and education.

Campus Partnerships

Learning at Iowa collaborates with over 45 academic departments and administrative offices to share the Three Ms with students and promote academic success.

Faculty and staff members in every undergraduate college are adapting the framework to their unique needs and promoting effective learning strategies through academic courses, advising and coaching, and peer-led support services such as tutoring and mentoring.
